Six year old first grader Yang Ying exhibited
cultural traditional respect for elders when she took a
water bottle
from the yong guide to give
it to Mr. Bailey; she consented for this photo then
gave
us each a kiss on the cheek in farewell.
This slightly older girl asked the Baileys to pose
with her.
When Mr. Bailey offered her an American
dollar bill, she at first would
not accept it
because she had nothing to give in return. Her father
reminded her
of the new souvenir necklace around her
neck; she removed it, put it
around Mr. Bailey's
neck, and then happily accepted the dollar!
The editor of several newspapers gave Dr. and
Mr. Bailey a personal tour of his nearly completed building,
then hosted an elaborate
and lengthy lunch.
After a personally conducted tour of the Wu culture
museum,
which he and his wife had established,
Professor Wu and the entire
family hosted a dinner
in honor of the Baileys' visit.
In 2001, Dr. Bailey made a presentation on
English as a Second Language techniques
to Chinese educators at
Beijing
Normal Universtiy.
